Dr. Shelby Baker grew up in Rockville, Maryland and ventured westward after graduation from veterinary school in May of 2000.  She attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine for her undergraduate studies and graduated Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor of Arts degree in June of 1994.  She acquired her veterinary training / education at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia.  There her educational focus was on small animal medicine and surgery with special interests in oncology and ultrasound.

Ironically, it was Dr. Baker’s personal love of skiing, however, that brought her to Reno.  In search of higher vertical and deeper power, Dr. Baker fell in love with Reno after taking her first trip to Lake Tahoe and has never looked eastward since!  When not hard at work in daytime small animal practice—at least in the wintertime—Dr. Baker enjoys pushing herself to new extremes on the ski hill.  She is a professionally certified ski instructor and was even lucky enough to have met her husband on the slopes of Alpine Meadows where they both taught skiing together.  When the snow melts, Dr. Baker also loves camping, playing with her pets and her two children Hannah and Matthew, as well as traveling to foreign countries...Germany being one of her all-time favorites… there, where she can brush up on her second spoken language.

Dr. Baker’s greatest professional aspiration has been to be a founder and owner of a small animal veterinary practice.  She was extremely excited to partner with co-founder Dr. Katie Weldon, whom she has worked with for the past 9 years, together creating Mount Rose Animal Hospital.  Dr. Baker is dedicated to providing her clients with the highest level of medical and surgical services for their dogs, cats and pocket pets.  Her special interests continue to involve caring for cancer patients as well as bringing ultrasound capabilities to Mount Rose Animal Hospital in the near future.  In addition, Dr. Baker is a strong advocate of “preventative medicine” practice.. from puppy/kitten-dom through their geriatric years.  Dr. Baker strives to build devoted, long-term veterinary-client-patient relationships.   It is from this foundation that Dr. Baker strives to promote the best day-to-day pet care advice and services to ensure her patients live long and healthy, happy lives.
